Logan's 18-month update

A year and a half old already...wow. Logan is quite a character, that's for sure! He has really started being his own person. It's easy to tell when he's happy and when he's sad! When we were eating lunch at Sonic one afternoon, he used his tots container as a sippy cup holder.

This pose is for when he doesn't want to do something. Cute, but frustrating! :o)

We went to the Zoo after lunch and he got to ride the train! Mommy and Abby rode on the train, too. Actually, Mommy was busy changing Abby's wet diaper while on the train, haha!

Logan's favorite food is still blueberries. I swear, the kid could eat his weight in blueberries! We started giving him frozen blueberries when he was teething about a year ago, and since then, he has always craved frozen fruit. We'll often find him trying to open the freezer for a fruit treat!

Logan absolutely LOVES his kitchen set. He and Melissa love making me yummy treats. I've found them starting to "feed" Abby pretend food, which is pretty cute. Maybe that'll help her transition to solid foods :o)
This is how Logan chills. Juice, bear slippers, and freshly bathed. Ah, the life!

We went with Grandpa Dan and Grandma Laurie to the Elegant Farmer for caramel apples before Halloween. There were some huge rocking horses that Logan loved playing on! Grandpa thought the horses had "handles," but they were actually just stirrups :o) Silly!

Logan doesn't really like to talk as much as most kids. He says a few words, but still uses gibberish quite frequently. He says: mama, dad, chip, puppy, Emma (our cat), blueberry, clock, sock, up, down, more, please, thank you (which is just "e" right now, but he says it as a word), yummy, and a few more that I can't think of right now. He knows lots of animal sounds, including cow, cat, dog, dinosaur, monkey, lion, and tiger. Despite many attempts to teach him otherwise, he still thinks a horse growls...not sure where he got that one! He doesn't repeat what we say. He recently started shouting, "Gabba Gabba" when he wants to watch that awful show. :o)
He's getting much taller and his hair is getting long. Time for a haircut soon, but I love the curls too much to cut them off!
He's a great big brother to Abby. I'll make a post about his own baby and Abby later :o)

Abby's 3-month update

Gosh, Abby is 3 and a half months old already! Where has the time gone?! She is getting SO big. She's in 3-6 month clothes already and sometimes certain outfits even seem small!

All of her baby hair in the picture above has fallen out and she's an adorable little blonde baldie now. Her eyes are still blue. We'll see if they stay blue! Logan's are a bright, icy blue, so maybe she'll get those. Jim's are grey-blue and mine are a greenish blue. Even with all of that blue, she could still get brown!

She has rolled over a few times, but hasn't in a good week or two. Not worried -- non-mobility is so much easier ;o) Abby gives the biggest of her grins to Logan, who is completely infatuated with her. He constantly comes over and rubs her head and tries to burp her.

I am LOVING all of the super-duper cute smiles we get from this gorgeous angel :o)
She loves listening to stories with Daddy and Logan at night. (Okay, and I know this entry is about Abby, but how cute are Logan's pajamas?!)
She sleeps like a champ!!!! Abby goes down at about 10 pm and sleeps until 8 am each morning with no night feedings. She is mighty hungry when she wakes up, but I see no need to wake her up to feed her when she's capable of letting me know when she's hungry. Since she sleeps so well at night, she's not much of a napper during the day. We still don't have a "schedule" for naps for her, but she seems quite content with playing it by ear, so I'm okay with that!

Abby is still a Mommy's girl. We're still nursing, minus one bottle of formula before bed because I don't have enough for her to fill up before sleeping through the night. I'm really proud to hav gone 15 weeks already, since I didn't get any milk that came in with Logan. I am still experiencing a low supply, but am trying to keep it up as long as I can. I gave up on the Fenugreek because I hated the way it made me smell, but I drink a lot of water and eat protein to help boost my supply.
I can't believe my little girl is so big already! She's just as easy-going as Logan was, so we're blessed to have two pretty tame little ones.
And can I say, dressing girls is an EXPENSIVE obsession :o)

Halloween

Halloween was so much fun! We carved pumpkins with the kids this year, and by that I mean that they watched Jim and me carve pumpkins :o) We did a Wizard of Oz theme this year -- Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, and then a fourth pumpkin with both Dorothy and Toto. So cute! Logan didn't quite get it and kept putting the pokers in the holes of the carved-out pumpkins.
The kids were all dressed up in their Halloween shirts. Logan's was a glow-in-the-dark mummy shirt, which he thought was all kinds of cool when he went to take his nap and he had glowing green on his shirt! Abby's had a cute little black cat on it, and if I'm not mistaken, hers glowed, too, but we didn't see it. Hm...have to check that out!

The kids' costumes were so cute! Logan was an elephant (and he kept the trunk and ears on the WHOLE time we trick-or-treated!) and Abby was the most adorable tiger you've ever seen! We went trick-or-treating in our neighborhood with Logan's friend Melissa and her parents. After that, we stopped by my parents' house to take the kids to a few neighbors' houses.
All in all, it was a great Halloween! Mom and Dad had to take some of the candy that Logan got, of course :o)

Long time gone

Would you believe it's hard to find time to blog with two kids under two years old?! :o)

Things have been going well for us. Abby is getting SO big! She rolled over two weeks ago while we were at Jim's grandma's house to visit. It was very exciting!

Logan is an incredible big brother. He loves his sister so much and is always helping out. He gets excited when we hear her cry in her room because he loves going in and saying "hi" to her.

Two weeks ago, Jim started grad school again, which was quite an adjustment for all of us. It's going to be tough for him with two little ones and a wife who stays at home and anticipates her husband coming home to give her a little break every day.

Jim is also really busy with finishing our basement. We're really hoping that it can be finished for Christmas. If it's not done by then, it has to be done by January because I'm having a Lia Sophia party and I want to host it in my newly finished basement :o)

I'm still not working and I really have mixed emotions about it. I miss teaching, that's for sure. However, I know that I could not work full-time with these kids and taking care of the house. As it is, I have a hard time taking care of our house!

I am bringing in some money, though, by babysitting. Logan's girlfriend comes over every day for a few hours, which has been lots of fun. To be honest, it's really not any more difficult than having my own two kids. She comes in the afternoons while Logan's napping, which is sometimes my only "productive" time during the day, but I enjoy playing with her, even though house work isn't getting done. Logan just loves playing with her and is learning how to share very well.
And just some recent pictures for good measure:

Big Brother Logan

Logan has been a spectacular big brother since we brought Abby home. He is only 15 months old, so we weren't sure how he would react to a baby sister.

This was in the hospital, right after she was born. He didn't know what to do with her, but he definitely wanted to touch her!

When we brought her home, he was very interested in her and wanted to poke her all over. He was quite interested in her!

When Daddy put her on the floor, Logan was so excited!

Two days later, and still VERY interested in touching her.

But, you know, babies aren't always quiet. He figured out quite fast that the pacifier was a great way for making the baby quiet! Logan loves helping out, but doesn't always know exactly how to do it...

Unfortunately for Logan, the Soothies pacifiers are hard to hold. He holds onto the wrong end and can't get it in her mouth. He just kind of shoves it on her face. Obviously, Abby really doesn't appreciate it ;o)
This was the kids' first bath together. Logan, being the great big brother he is, helped me wash her with a washcloth.
Now that Abby is more than a week old, Logan thinks it's okay to try to pick her up, just like Mommy and Daddy do. She's a little heavier than she looks, Logan!

So now I have to keep an eye on Logan and his little sister... He brought two of his knives from his kitchen playset and put them on her stomach. He then would put them back when she would move and they would fall off. I might watch too many episodes of Forensic Files!!
Abby and her knives from her big brother.

Logan is really such a great helper. He loves to bring us bottles for her and he pushes her in her swing when she's in it. He is doing a really good job as Abby's big brother.

Baby Abigail is here!

Here I am on July 18th -- 38 weeks pregnant:

During the middle of the night, Jim and I went to the hospital after several hours of contractions. After a wonderful epidural and 4 minutes of pushing, Abigail Louise was born!

Abigail was 18.5" long and weighed in at 7 pounds and 12.3 ounces. She has a head of dark, stick-up hair, except in the front, where it looks like she has already started to lose some of her hair. We were very lucky that she was so healthy and that the delivery was so easy. She actually had a double cord, wrapped once around her neck and another time around her shoulders. Luckily, she never went into distress, so we had no idea it was wrapped around her until she was born.

Such a sweet face :o)

Mommy and Daddy with Abby

My parents brought Logan to visit. He was sporting his "Big Brother" t-shirt, and Abby had her "Little Sister" t-shirt. He was more interested in watching TV than seeing his baby sister!
Ready to go home from the hospital in her beautiful dress :o)
She was born on July 19th and we were able to go home on July 21st. We are so glad to be home!

Mr. Bookworm

Logan is a champion sleeper. He loves his blankie (seen here behind his head) and won't sleep without it. To be honest, I don't know what time Logan wakes up in the morning. He gets up silently and plays in his crib. I've watched him on our video monitor several times. First, he plays around with his blankie, sea horse, and prayer boy doll.
Then, Logan reaches out and grabs books off of his bookshelf. He reads them to himself for quite a long time. He never fusses in his crib in the morning. I usually come and get him after half an hour or so, but there have been some days I've gotten busy and have left him in there to read for an hour! He just loves his books!

4th of July

At 9 months pregnant, the 4th of July is an exhausting holiday! It's no fun to be so big when it's so hot out. My internal furnace makes me so warm to begin with, and add to it 90-degree weather, and it's a lethal combination.

Regardless, we had a great time with Logan! On the 3rd, we stopped by the festivities and met my parents to hang out. Jim decided to take Logan on his first ride. Jim and I were trying to figure out which ride would be best for him. Mommy thought the swings would be good. Daddy was feeling brave and wanted to go on the little dragon roller coaster. Since Daddy was the one going on the ride with Logan, the roller coaster won!

Logan whimpered a little on the second time around, but for the rest of the ride, was just wide-eyed and confused. Guess he's not a roller coaster type of kid!

On the 4th, we went to the parade, where Logan collected a whole bunch of Tootsie Rolls. He had to hold them ALL in his hands during the parade. Logan loved dancing around with his little flags!

After the parade, we stopped by a baptism party to see my best friend, Amanda, who was in town visiting from Florida. Logan got to spend some time with his Godmother and her newest Godson, Benjamin.

During the fireworks, Logan was only afraid for the first few seconds. He had his daddy there to protect him :o)

Just Another Day in Paradise

The title of this blog is "Just Another Day in Paradise." You may recognize this from one of Phil Vassar's songs. I think it describes our lives perfectly! Everything may not go right, but every night, I think about how lucky I am to live in "Paradise." It really is "two hearts, one dream" and I wouldn't trade it for anything. :o)

The kids screaming, phone ringing
Dog barking at the mailman bringing
That stack of bills - overdue
Good morning baby, how are you?
Got a half hour, quick shower
Take a drink of milk but the milk's gone sour
My funny face makes you laugh
Twist the top on and I put it back
There goes the washing machine
Baby, don't kick it.
I promise I'll fix it
Long about a million other things

Well, it's ok. It's so nice
It's just another day in paradise
Well, there's no place that
I'd rather be
Well, it's two hearts
And one dream
I wouldn't trade it for anything
And I ask the Lord every night
For just another day in paradise

Friday, you're late
Guess we'll never make our dinner date
At the restaurant. You start to cry
Baby, we'll just improvise
Well, plan B looks like
Domino's pizza in the candlelight
Then we'll tippy toe to our room
Make a little love that's overdue
But somebody had a bad dream
"Mama and daddy,
Can me and my teddy
Come in to sleep in between?"

Yeah it's ok. It's so nice.
It's just another day in paradise.
Well, there's no place thatI'd rather be
Well, it's two hearts
And one dream
I wouldn't trade it for anything
And I ask the Lord every night
For just another day in paradise

As you follow our journey through this blog, we will show you a bit of what our Paradise is like!

Introduction

We are just your typical family, trying to make ends meet and enjoy life as much as possible.

This is me -- I'm Ashley, a 24-year-old teacher. I have been teaching 2nd grade for three years now. I really love working with kids, as hard as some days can be! A hobby of mine is scrapbooking.

This is Jim. He is 26 years old and works as an electrical engineer. You can always find him tinkering around, especially in our basement, which he is working on finishing.

Jim and I started dating on June 28, 2000, got engaged on July 12, 2005, and got married on July 7, 2007.

On April 9, 2009, we were blessed with a little boy -- Logan James. He weighed 8 lbs 13 oz at birth. He is an absolutely adorable little boy. He's a Daddy's boy for sure and always wants to do what Daddy is doing. This kid is going to be an engineer like Daddy!

We are expecting our second baby, a girl, on July 29, 2010! Logan will be a big brother very soon!
